5 Solutions For Microaggressions at Work

Picture it, you’re on your way to work and proactively hyping yourself up so you’ll be in a good mood when you walk through the doors to your desk. You’ve got your favorite gospel song bumping on your car stereo. Your power breakfast to energize you throughout the day is packed and ready to eat. You even stopped at your favorite coffee shop since you woke up early.

The second sit at your desk, your boss calls you into your office to address a project you worked on with a coworker. You walk in, with your good vibes radiating. Come to find out, a coworker threw you under the bus for something they dropped the ball on.

Regardless of what happens next, this situation can happen to any of us despite our best efforts to have a positive workday. So instead of turning up on your boss, coworker and anyone else making eye contact, try defusing the situation and taking the high-road. That rent won’t pay itself sis.

1. Play some appropriate music for the situation.

My personal favorite video is him depicting his Friday nights where he does a flawless lip sync performance to “Human Nature.” His content is perfect for letting go of work stress and getting some tear-jerking laughs. 3. An Oil Diffuser.

If you’re feeling like the stressors of work is causing your jaw to clinch and your shoulders to tighten, try putting an oil diffuser at your desk. Not only will it naturally relax you, but your coworkers in close proximity will also reap the benefits. The easiest way to start is buy purchasing good ole’ lavender oil. Once you get tired of lavender, try orange oil in the mornings to waken your senses and progress from there.

4. The Read PodcastIn case your late to the party, this podcast will get you through a coworker confusing you with the other black girl at work. I’ve been listening to The Read religiously for the past two years and they never fail to make me laugh during the “Listener Letters” segment. They always manage to share my sentiments during “The Read” segment when they discuss the most recent racist news or awkward social situations. Once your hooked, you can also get the opportunity to see this super relatable duo in person during one of their live shows.

5. Buy Black. If you’re not currently living out your dream job, go and support someone who is. Purchase some office supplies and decor from a black-owned business and improve the overall vibe at your work station.
